[Chinese/Pinyin/English] Wang Xian – Unrestrained (忘羡 – 无羁) The Untamed OST (陈情令) Lyrics – By Xiao Zhan & Wang Yi Bo

Other titles: Wu Ji
– These are all my interpretations. I feel like I might change my mind on some parts after I officially start watching the drama. Excluding the parts I’ve peeked at, (which is basically all the important parts) I’m only at Episode 4 so far. Yeah yeah…I know I’m ridiculously far behind but in my defense, the more I like a drama, the slower I watch it. Hehe.
– For some parts, I’ve gone with translating the meaning but have left explanations at the bottom

wén dí shēng dú chóuchàng
Hear the flute, alone in its melancholy
yún shēn yè wèi yāng
The night is still young at Cloud Recesses[1]
shì yǔ fēi dōu guò wǎng
Right and wrong[2] are all in the past
xǐng lái le zěn néng dāng mèng yī chǎng
After waking, how can I act like it was just a dream
hóng chén zhōng huǐ yù dé shī rú hé qù liáng
In this world, how do we measure praise and condemnation[2]
xiāo xiāo xuè rè dāo fēng liáng
As it rains, the sword is drawn in anger[3]

shān gāo shuǐ yuǎn
From a long distance away[4]
yòu wén qín xiǎng
The Qin[5] can be heard again
chén qíng wèi jué
Chen Qing[6] is still sounding
wò dí huā yuè rú shuāng
The silvergrass rests and the moon is like frost[7]

zhǔ yī hú shēng sǐ bēi huān jì shàonián láng
Boil a pot of friendship[8] to honour the youth
míng yuè yī jiù hé lái chàng wǎng
The moon is bright like always, why am I listless
bù rú xiāo xiāo sǎ sǎ lì biàn fēng hé làng
Wouldn’t it be better to experience all the storms with no restrains
tiān yá yī qǔ gòng yōu yáng
Share a melodious song with the world

chuān wàn shuǐ guò qiān shān
Crossing many rivers and mountains
lù jìn rén máng máng
Reaching the end of the road and at a lost of where to go next[9]
shì yǔ fēi dōu guò wǎng
Right and wrong[2] are all in the past
xǐng lái le jiù dāng tā mèng yī chǎng

xiào shì shì duō wú cháng
Laugh at the world’s unpredictability

Boil a pot of friendship[8] to honour the youth

[1] Lan Zhan’s home. Can also mean ‘dark clouds’, making the sentence “The clouds are dark and the night is still young”
[2] These are bits from a line that Wei Ying said to Lan Zhan ‘
是非在己 – my heart will be the judge of whether something is right or wrong
毁誉由人 – leave praise or condemnation up to man
得失不论 – no matter the end / regardless of success or failure
Meaning: After deciding on what is right or wrong, regardless of whether I receive praise or condemnation, I’ll leave it to fate.
[3] (Very unsure about this so I’ll break it into little bits for ya’ll to decide for yourselves):
萧萧 sound of whistling wind / pattering rain
血热 blood hot (angry)
刀锋凉 sword’s edge cools (because it comes into contact with the rain)
[4] Literal meaning – High mountains and far away rivers
[5] Lan Zhan’s zither, Wang Ji
[6] Wei Ying’s flute
[7] (Very unsure about this so…little bits again):
卧 Sleeping / lying / resting
Silvergrass
The moon is like frost
Life and death, sorrow and joy. Describes a deep relationship / friendship.
Together with the next line, it’s painting a scene where Lan Zhan looks at the sky and sees that the moon is how it had always been but Wei Ying isn’t there anymore.
Actually means ‘vast/boundless’ but that’s a weird description for people so…yeah. It has a connotation of being lost – to have a long future ahead but be unsure of where to go

Can ya’ll see that I’m struggling with this song? 😂 So many things that needed to be explained, and this is easier than Lan Zhan’s ‘Won’t Forget’ & Wei Ying’s ‘Qu Jin Chen Qing’…

  3. This is a very good translation! I’ve seen so many different ones that I’ve decided to do my own, keeping the story in mind. Similar to what you have done, I think. I’ve been using yours as a comparison to mine, and I love all your footnotes. Chinese to English is much harder than I thought, especially in a song that is more poetic than conversational.

Glad you found the footnotes helpful, they helped me too, I didn’t have to worry about my translations not making sense😂
Yesh! Poetic songs are so hard to translate *cry

  4. Wow, thank you so much for this! It includes all the elements that I’m looking for – the original Chinese, the pinyin to help me sing along and read the lyrics, and the English translation to help make sense of them!
