Verse 1:
nà nián fēng chuī guò hǎi táng nǐ de mù guāng
That year the wind blew past Haitang[1], the look in your eyes
rè qiè néng yǔ tiān guāng xiāng dāng qīng huàn wǒ huí shén yī wàng
was so earnest that it could rival the daylight, gently snapping me out of my thoughts to look over
yǎn qián shào nián xié duàn chūn guāng
The youth in front of me carries a piece of spring with him
wèi céng xiǎng rén shì biàn huàn yǒu duō wú cháng
I had never thought of how unpredictable changes are in this world

Verse 2:
nà nián yǒu màn tiān fēi shuāng nǐ de shǒu zhǎng
That year, snowflakes filled the whole sky, your hand
zèng wǒ xīn tóu yī piàn wēn tàng jiàng lín dì yī chǎng chūn guāng
gifted my heart with a piece of warmth and brought about the first scenes of spring
qián shì jīn shēng rú hé néng wàng
How could I forget the past life and this life
wèi céng xiǎng zhè qíng yī zì duō me cháng
I had never thought that the word “love” could mean forever

Pre-Chorus 1:
hòu lái shí gǔ xiāng qiāo kāi fàng cóng cǐ tiān gè yī fāng
Afterwards, the bone eating fragrance was secretly released and from then on we’re in different corners of the world
jiàn xíng jiàn yuǎn jiàn yī bàn xīn shì yǐn mì chéng guò wǎng
We gradually grow further apart until we become separate halves, my worries are so hidden they become a thing of the past
yī zhěn huáng liáng mèng tài cháng yǎng kàn cǐ yuè guāng
This pipe dream is too long, looking up to see this moonlight
dāng wǎng shì fú xiàn huǎng rán rú mèng jǐ chǎng
When past events appear before my eyes, it dawns on me like a series of dreams

Chorus 1:
ài hèn cǐ xiāo bǐ zhǎng tíng bù huí wàng wǒ péi nǐ tóng wǎng
Love and hate wax and wanes, stopping to glance back, I’ll go with you
niàn xiǎng cóng wèi xiāo wáng tà duàn hóng chén bù kěn xiāng wàng
I’ve never stopped missing you, we travel the mortal world, unwilling to forget each other
fēi shàng jiǔ tiān luò qiān zhàng wèi nǐ chuǎng yī tàng
Be it flying up to the highest heavens or falling a thousand feet, I’ll brave it for you
ruò nǐ dú liú yuǎn fāng shéi lái yǔ wǒ xiāng wàng
If you stay alone at a distant place, who will exchange gazes with me

Verse 3:
sān qiān shí jiē tài bīng liáng tā céng pū shàng
Three thousand stone steps are too cold, he once lay on them
yī lù sǐ shēng yú xià bēi shāng yuán fèn cuò luò rú shēn shāng
A journey of life and death that only leaves sorrow, a misplaced fate like shen and shang[2]
cāng huáng sī liang ài yì sī cáng
Weighing everything hastily and hiding away my love
bù yuàn xiǎng zhè qíng yī zì duō huāng táng
Unwilling to think about how laughable the word ‘love’ is

Pre-Chorus 2:
jiě yǔ hǎi táng xiāng wèi xiāo sàn jì wǒ qíng shēn yī wǎng
Smelling the Haitang fragrance that has yet to dissipate, I’m reminded of my deep affections for you
ruò zèng hún líng wǒ xiōng táng nián huá àn huàn mò chóu chàng
As if you’d gifted my chest with a soul, secretly trading your years in exchange for me not to be sad
nǐ de mú yàng kè xīn shàng qià sì cǐ yuè guāng
Your appearance has been engraved on my heart, it looks just like this moonlight
zhào tiān dì cāng máng què yǒu huā yǐng chéng shuāng
that illuminates this vast world, but even the flower’s shadow form a pair[3]

(Repeat Chorus 1)

Chorus 2:
ài hèn cǐ xiāo bǐ zhǎng tíng bù huí wàng wǒ péi nǐ tóng wǎng
Love and hate wax and wanes, stopping to glance back, I’ll go with you
niàn xiǎng cóng wèi xiāo wáng tà duàn hóng chén bù kěn xiāng wàng
I’ve never stopped missing you, we travel the mortal world, unwilling to forget each other
wǎn yè wēi yǔ wèn hǎi táng yòng dì jiǔ tiān cháng
In the late night, Wei Yu inquires after Wan Ning[4], I’ll spend an eternity
yǔ nǐ bìng jiān gòng shǎng zhè chǎng rén jiān fēng guāng
by your side, enjoying the human world’s sights together with you

[1] 海棠 (hǎi táng) – Begonia / Chinese Flowering Crabapple (I’m not too sure because I’m getting mixed answers in my research)
[2] Shen and Shang (Orion and Scorpius) are two stars that never appear in the same sky. Describes two people who are separated and can never meet again.
[3] It isn’t clear whether he’s seeing the shadow of two flowers or a flower and its shadow. But whatever the case, this line gives off a depressed feeling of: Even the flower has a companion, why am I alone?
[4] 晚夜微雨问海棠 – The title of the song. I decided to leave it as my favourite interpretation of this line but there’s double meanings due to novel references so I’ll break it down for ya’ll to decide for yourselves:
(P.S. Chu Wan Ning is Mo Wei Yu’s shizun)
I’ll note them down as: (Literal Meaning) / (Novel Meaning)
(Wan Ye Yu Heng aka Yu Heng of the Night)
Light Rain / Mo Wei Yu (one of the leads)
问 – asks or inquires after
Begonia or Chinese Flowering Crabapple / The scent on Wan Ning’s body
